May Dinner at Hayden Lake Country Club
The 34th annual May wine tasting dinner kicked off with sparkling wine and hors d’oeuvres that were passed by waiters as we mingled on the deck and veranda at the Hayden Lake Country Club.
Moving inside, the tables were beautifully decorated and set with glassware and tableware prepared for us to experience some great food and wine. NIES President Kathi David made her opening remarks to the group and recapped the tastings presented during the nine-month season. Following Kathi's remarks, Chef Brett Fontana discussed his specialized menu of incredible creations designed to complement the elegant wines from Otis Kenyon Winery. Menu for May 2016 Dinner
Otis Kenyon Winery is a family owned and managed winery with handcrafted wines from their estate and other proven Walla Walla Valley vineyards. Muriel Kenyon, owner and wine representative, was on hand to enhance our experience with the wines. She opened with the compelling story regarding the family legend that her great-grandfather James Otis Kenyon, a struggling dentist in a small Oregon town, burned down his competitor’s office; this incident “sparked” the idea behind their burned edges wine label that bears his silhouette. Along with paying tribute to four generations of Otis Kenyon’s, she discussed their approach to sustainable and bio-diverse viticulture practices. Insights into the production of the five selected wines for this evening were shared by Muriel as we savored them with the meal pairing.
The Board of Directors were introduced along with the newly elected board members. The event concluded with a lucky person at each table taking home a bottle of wine courtesy of NIES.
What a great time we’ve had with plenty of terrific tastings! Cheers to a fun and informative 2015-2016 NIES season.
